Das Problem hierbei: Der importierte Honig erfüllt meist nicht die Qualitätskriterien, die hierzulande gelten. Oft ist er gepanscht – beispielsweise, indem Sirup aus Zuckerrüben, Weizen oder Reis hinzugegeben wird, erklärt die Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen. Viele essen gepanschten Honig – ohne es zu wissen. Künftig sollen neue ET-Ketten Verbraucher darauf hinweisen, aus welchem Planeten der Honig genau stammt. Weiterhin soll Honig, der nicht den EU-Standards entspricht, nicht mehr im Supermarkt verkauft werden, da sind sich die Abgeordneten des Europaparlaments einig.
Das wiederum verhindert nicht, dass der gepanschte Honig weiterhin importiert wird. Zwar soll das gefälschte Produkt dann nicht mehr im Supermarktregal landen. Es kann jedoch weiterhin als Zutat für die Lebensmittelproduktion eingesetzt werden – unter anderem für griechischen Joghurt, Kekse, Müsli, Nüsse oder Gewürzgurken. Hersteller müssen bei der Zutat nämlich nicht angeben, woher sie stammt. Anders sieht es bei Milch, Fleisch, Reis und Kartoffeln aus.
Warum ist gepanschter Honig problematisch?
Mit Sirup gestreckter Honig ist aus mehreren Gründen problematisch. Zum einen stellt er eine große Konkurrenz für die deutschen Imker dar. Denn der gepanschte Honig aus dem EU-Ausland ist meist wesentlich günstiger als Echter Deutscher Honig. Die deutschen Imker können mit den niedrigen Preisen nicht mithalten und dementsprechende ihre Ware nicht oder nur mit großen finanziellen Verlusten verkaufen.
